Travel photography is not easy.  

 It requires an enthusiastic and tolerant attitude,
plus a sharp eye and quick responses.   In most cases, when you visit a distant location
it is the ONLY time you will ever be there.   Don't waste a minute.
It's great to have a backup camera, but that's just another thing to carry, break or lose.
Plus, an expensive camera dangling around your neck is a temptation to thieves.
It also attracts a lot of attention, and you don't usually want that.
On a trip to India and Thailand I carried the Canon XT digital with 2 lenses.
I also took a portable tripod, flash unit, 2 GB of storage
and the Archos Gmini 400, a 20 GB color LCD photo and music storage unit.
We also had a small 5 MP portable digital camera.
On my second trip, I took the Canon 30D, with 3 lenses, a flash unit
and the Fuji 3000 small digital camera with video.
