To do a dance shoot efficiently you need a camera that has a large magazine.
Those being used here take 70mm film and the magazine holds 700 shots.
It is the same type of camera used for many school photos.
Lens is 75mm to 150mm, about the equivalent of 50mm to 105mm in 35mm format.

Lighting in this case is flat, about 1000 watt-seconds,
set high and about 45 degrees to the sides.
Keep the model a few feet away from backdrop to prevent shadows.
Young children must be worked with directly, placing hands and feet in proper position.
The facial expression is very important, and keep camera about eye-level or slightly higher.  The proper pose for the style of dance is also important,
so it helps to know a lot of dance poses.
Look at the dancer's footwear;
it's a strong clue to how to pose the feet, since ballet, tap, lyrical,
and modern dance have quite different styles.

Posing groups is a challenge, since the photo must look balanced
and fit within the frame without shooting off the backdrop.
Subjects are usually different heights, so you must use posing boxes hidden from the camera in order to make several levels.
The photographer must develop rapport with the group and get all the eyes toward the camera at the same time.
It is best to take several shots of each group.
Poses must match the style of dance.
Young dancers are often unsure of themselves in front of a camera,
so the photographer must be the director.
