Christmas is the celebration of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem.
According the Bible's Gospel books, the most thorough writings about Jesus' life,
wise men came from the Far East to worship Jesus as a King, while he was a baby.  Jesus was born in a "manger."

Christmas day is celebrated in late December, shortly after the sun turns north and the days start getting longer.
The choice of date is symbolic, since nobody really knows when Jesus was born.
Astrologically, the date is in early Capricorn, the sign of the mountain goat.
The early light falls first on the rugged mountain peaks, where the surefooted goat lives.
Christmas was once a pagan holiday and has been through a number of changes over the centuries.
For a time, the Pilgrims outlawed it because it was too festive.
It has now become a caricature of the original celebration, with a lot of silly commercial additives,
as well as exaggerated political correctness and puffed up religious piousness. 

Essentially, it's a celebration of life, and being "reborn".    That's always a nice thing to do.
