About aerial photography

Aerial photography is challenging and definitely not for everyone.  Aside from trying to frame the photo in a cramped, vibrating space,
there is the difficulty of precisely locating the property you want to photograph.

Anyone can go up in a plane and take pictures, but it takes a professional to get top notch angles and composition,  plus prepare the images for all kinds of publication or media use, including the internet.     We also sell stock photos, prints, and image licensing.

There are several kinds of aerial photography.

The most common kind is what's called "oblique". That means the photos are taken from an "oblique" angle,
for example from 30 to 75 degrees. Vertical aerial photography is direct 90 degrees.
This usually requires a camera mounted in the floor of the plane or helicopter.
This type of photography is more expensive, and is used when precise measurements are needed.

Oblique photography produces a much more aesthetic image. We only do oblique photography.

Helicopter or plane? Helicopters are far more expensive to operate than small planes. They also make a lot more noise and can disturb a whole neighborhood.    Helicopters make sense for cinematic quality video, unusual or dangerous terrain, sweeping panoramas of places that are hard to photograph, and so on. We use mostly Cessna 172 airplanes, a high wing aircraft that provides a better view and open window.    I also use helicopters when the job requires one.

Another recent innovation in aerial photography is the use of small balloons, or even kites,
to carry a digital wireless camera that sends the photo down to an operator on the ground
who views a screen and snaps the photo. This is useful in situations where you can't get a plane into an area,
or get it low enough for good photos. Balloon based aerial photos require special equipment,
and are not necessarily less costly, because they still require the operator to travel to the location,
set up, and edit the photos.

Image stabilizing lenses.    Most static ( not video ) aerial photography does not depend
on an image stabilizing lens, because modern cameras have high film speed settings.
The combination of fast "film" speed and a normal high quality lens produces a fast shutter action that captures a sharp image.
Image stabilization is more important when in a helicopter because it vibrates more than a small airplane.
